Memoboard mit Fächern ~ Memo Board with Pockets

It’s ”Freutag”* again! And I am absolutely happy about my new memo board. I wanted to have / make one of these for a loooong, long time but never really liked the idea of plywood as base… Then, in the deeps of the internet, I came across the idea of using a canvas instead. I just had to make one myself and now I finally did! So today you can read about my version with little pockets – as a little tutorial, of course. ;) It’s really quick & easy.
You can see now what I used my “Lil’Bow for, too.

*”Freutag” can be translated to “Joyday”; it’s a German link party

Was man braucht:

What you need:
  • Canvas (mine ist 41 cm x 30 cm but everything else is fine, too)
  • Fabric to cover; maybe 2 different looks if you want pockets
  • Elastic band
  • Maybe double-sided adhesive tape (not that necessary)
  • Stapler
  • Needle & Thread
  • Buttons
  • Maybe some more decoration
  • Maybe superglue
Cut the fabric about 4-5 cm bigger than your canvas is depending on its depth. Make sure there is enough fabric to turn to the backside of your canvas. I cut mine 28 cm x 34 cm.
I wanted my pockets to be 10 cm in height, so I cut 10 cm + 2 cm hem + 4 cm to turn to the back = 16 cm height to the same width of 28 cm.

So geht’s

Here’s how
First, you sew the hem on the pocket fabric. Press 2x 1 cm to the wrong side and topstitch so you get a proper hem. Then stitch the pocket piece to the background fabric (right sides facing towards you, there is no turning needed). I then divided the pocket piece into 2/3 and 1/3 with a vertical seam to get two pockets of a different size.

Place the canvas with its backside facing towards you in the middle of the fabric which is placed with its wrong side facing towards you. Staple one side and turn the canvas around. Place a couple of pieces of the double sided adhesive tape on the canvas’ sides (this step is optional – what I used here was a little much… less would have worked, too ;) ). Then, pull the fabric carefully over the canvas and press it on a little. Pay attention to not have any folds, bucklings, knobs, bulges or other slubs and unevenesses in the fabric and it being nice and tight everywhere. Staple the other three sides, then.

The corners might be a little tricky but not a real problem. I turned the fabric in a 45° angle first, stapled it once, turned around the rest, and stapled again. There is a nicer way, for sure – but like this it’s nice & easy and still nice to look at. :)

Finished with stapling it should look something like this. I bet you can do better than I did… But luckily nobody sees it from behind once it’s on the wall!

Now it’s the elastic band’s turn! The way you stretch it is totally left to you. I wanted to spare the pockets so I had them cross each other transverse. Staple the elastic band on one side, first. Then, stretch it a little (so that it may hold its things) and staple it to the other side.

You can stitch on little buttons to secure the elastic band’s crossings. Pull the thread twice through the needle’s eye to not puncture the canvas too much – like this it looks better on the front side if the thread is used 4-times. A threading-auxiliary (how do you call these things – do you know them?) you can find in little sewing sets are worth gold, here!

You basically sew on the buttons with only one stitch per whole. I tied up the threads on the backside and cut them scarcely. It’s solid as can be without perforating the canvas. ;)

One of my four buttons could not be sewn, however, because it is placed on the wooden rim. I had to improvise here: So, I just pulled the 4-times-thread through the button and tied it up on the back. You can then place it where you like with superglue (my new favorite “tool”) and from the front it looks like it is sewed on. ;)

Of course, you can apply other deco things! I decided on a little wooden butterfly (bought it in a set of 3 in a discounter – I HAD to!) and a “Lil’ Bow. I again glued them onto the fabric with the superweapon… ehm… superglue. If you like to glue something on the pockets be sure to put in a piece of paper before you do so! Otherwise, you will glue together the layers of fabric irrevocably and don’t have pockets. ;) You can pull down the paper pretty easily if the glue penetrates the fabric.

You are (nearly) ready now! In theory, you can now simply place the memo board somewhere or put it on a nail – but I wanted to attach a ribbon to hang it up. So, I put a knot to the end of a thin leather ribbon and stapled it to the back.
And now you can insert whatever you want!
(The shopping list is genuine, by the way! Now you know what I need to buy today, too… ;) )

…….......................................………………………………………………

This is not going to be the last memo board I made – now, that I know HOW easy this is. It turned out pretty “girlish”… and the spouse and I have the agreement to place such things only in my work room. ;) Alas, alas, I will have to make one more “neutral” for our new apartment that can be placed in the living room. What a real pity! You see, I simply HAVE to make another one. What a shame. :)

I will have a look now what others are happy about today and you have fun with (hopefully) making one yourself!
